RACING TERMS
Broodmaremare used for breeding. Some racehorse trainers insist that the most important element of a horse's pedigree is the dam - the broodmare. But this is difficult to prove since a stallion will produce hundreds, if not thousands, of offspring whilst most mares will only produce a handful due to the gestation period of 11 months. The best racehorses don't always make the best broodmares, but good broodmares usually produce successful offspring whatever sire they are mated with - despite some of the very best broodmares being unable to show any aptitude for racing themselves!
