Deep

very soft ground. When watching horses going to the start on very soft ground those with a pronounced knee lift are the ones likely to come home in front at the end of the race. It's not that their action is particularly suited to the mud but simply that racehorses with a high knee lift are disadvantaged on hard ground because of the force with which each stride hits the ground whilst flat flowing gallopers find it difficult to extend their stride on a soft surface.
